From a very tender age, I loved playing with hair and makeup. I was and still am a girly girl. Frills and glitter are my motto.
For the past nine years I have worked in the film and television industry as a hairstylist. I started off doing hair and makeup for the Spanish news station Telemundo. Once I had my days under my belt I joined local 706, the Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Guild, as a hairstylist. I have worked on dozens of shows since then and it has been an interesting journey for me. I never envisioned my career path to take this route. Nine years ago, I was in college wanting to become a lawyer. But one spring day in 2005, an opportunity fell in my lap that I couldn’t turn down. I never thought my career would take off as it has and I feel truly blessed to be given such an opportunity.
I met my husband on the set of the soap opera Passions back in 2007 and we have two kids. My son Ferris will be four in April and my daughter Elle just turned five months. It wasn’t until I had my daughter that my passion for eating clean and healthy began and my love for all things pure and natural sprouted. Originally, I had planned on nursing my daughter for only two months, but when I went to research which type of formula to give her I was absolutely shocked at how formula was made and what was in it. Needless to say, I exclusively breastfed her for almost five months before I had to introduce an organic formula into her diet. Something else that also disturbed me was the ingredients in baby products. There was no way I was putting any of it on my kids! So began my adventure down the path of all things organic and non-GMO. The process of planting a garden in my backyard – courtesy of my wonderful husband – and having my own chickens to lay fresh eggs is in the works. In a nutshell, I am trying to live a somewhat sustainable lifestyle. I make my own natural skin care products for myself and my family and am working on a natural skin care line.
Now let me give you all some background information about myself to give you guys a little insight about this life changing situation that has rocked my world. First of all, up until my son was one, I had the worst eating habits you could possibly imagine. The problem was, was that I could eat whatever I wanted and however much I wanted and still stay skinny as a twig. Until I had kids. Having kids changed my metabolism and I had to change my eating habits quick or else the numbers on my scale were on the rise. I always knew I needed to change the way I ate and this was the perfect time to start eating healthy. One problem. I didn’t know how to eat healthy. I hated diets and there was no way I was dieting.
One day, my sister-in-law joined Weight Watchers and for the next few weeks I watched her do the program. I was intrigued by it because it was designed to promote healthy eating habits and the upside was that there were no restrictions. So I joined Weight Watchers. Wow, what a drastic change from the norm. I went from eating junk food to having fruits and vegetables comprise the majority of my diet. It was hard at first but it got easier and easier the more I learned. And let me tell you that the weight started to fall right off. I realized that the key to losing the weight had to do more with what I put in my mouth rather than how much I exercised. I felt better and my energy increased. I am a lifetime member and I keep up my membership since it is now free to me even though I do not follow the program anymore. Throughout that journey I dug deeper into what it meant to truly be healthy and what it takes for our bodies to run optimally and efficiently. And in my future blogs I would like to share with you what I’ve learned.
Another thing that you guys should know about me is that I am, or was, a hair and makeup product whore. There is so much out there and so many new products are constantly being put on the market. I had to try them all. And being in the industry only fed into this obsession. Companies give us free stuff all the time. They want us to use their products on our shows and on celebrities to promote their line. I have boxes and boxes and boxes of hair and makeup products in my house and in storage. It’s kind of ridiculous. I could open up a beauty supply store with what I have. And it just keeps coming in.
With all of that being said, I have gone from being the ultimate consumer to now living a sustainable, pure and simple lifestyle. And you know what the funny thing is? It works. It works hundreds of times better than all the crap that I used to feed my body inside and out. I never turned back. Five months after having a baby I am in the best shape of my life and I feel better than I ever have.
I am looking forward to sharing with you all the things that I have learned and am learning as well as keeping you guys posted on the progress of my line. Until then!
